The Graduate Journal of Food Studies (GJFS) first hosted a series of virtual office hours leading up to the 2021 Just Food conference. Designed for folks to ‘think out loud’ and receive peer feedback on in-progress abstracts, they were especially helpful for graduate students and early-career researchers who were thinking about submitting abstracts for papers, lightning talks, or creative works. These inaugural sessions were held by Alanna K. Higgins, Cormac Cleary, Jess Fagin, and Maya Hey. We acknowledge and thank them for their work.
GAFS is expanding this initiative for the Fall 2021 semester to align with the upcoming graduate school application cycle. Prospective graduate students and current graduate students applying for additional education can “stop by” to ask questions, get advice, and receive feedback as they research programs and prepare their materials.
We welcome folks regardless of discipline, career stage, or degree of preparedness. These office hours are designed to be open-ended enough to adapt to the needs of whoever happens to show up.

How is a statement of purpose different from a personal statement? What types of information should you include in each? How do you make yours stand out? Bring your questions to Virtual Office Hours this month. Bring a draft, too, if you’d like us to look it over!
