Virtual Office Hours

The Graduate Journal of Food Studies (GJFS) will be hosting a series of virtual office hours in the weeks leading up to the February due date of submitting abstracts to the 2021 Just Food conference. The conference will be held virtually in June, and it will be jointly hosted by the Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS), Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS), Agriculture, Food, and Human Values Society (AFHVS) and Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition (SAFN).

You can find the Call for Abstracts here.

Our office hours are designed for folks to ‘think out loud’ and receive peer feedback on in-progress abstracts. It can be especially helpful to graduate students and early-career researchers who are thinking about submitting abstracts for:

  • a paper (15-20 minute oral presentation),
  • a lightning talk (7 minute presentation), or
  • creative works (e.g. interactive workshops, film screening, cooking demonstration).

We welcome folks regardless of discipline, career stage, or degree of preparedness. Bring what you have, which could range from a latent idea seed, a series of burning questions, to a full-on working draft. Rest assured, these office hours are designed to be open-ended enough to adapt to the needs of whoever happens to show up.

There will be three 1-hour sessions for virtual office hours:

  • Wednesday, January 27, 5PM-6PM EST
  • Wednesday, February 3rd, 12N-1PM EST / 5PM-6PM GMT
  • Wednesday, February 10th, 2PM-3PM EST / 7PM-8PM GMT
  • NB: Abstracts are due February 15, 2021.

To join the call on the day of, please go to www.bitly.com/drop-by-office-hours. There is no need to RSVP or register either, much like in-person office hours with professors. Feel free to drop in, chat, ask questions, and stay for as long as you need.

Depending on the date, the sessions will be facilitated by the following:

Left to right: Alanna Higgins (outreach and programming coordinator, GAFS), Cormac Cleary (co-editor and book reviews coordinator at GJFS), and/or Maya Hey (co-editor at GJFS).
